ZER0 is my praxis based research project for 2024.
Hand weaving almost always results in rectangular cloth. Its an extremely time-consuming process , every inch represents time at the loom and the cloth itself is limited in size by the width and capacity of the loom, so I want to explore the concept of Zero Waste Design(ZWD) with respect to handweaving. ZWD is still a relatively new concept but designers and researchers are developing innovative ways to reduce, even eliminate, the 15% average of cloth that is wasted during the cutting process. So I’m starting with some research to investigate the latest innovations and practices.
A related area to research is Whole Garment Weaving whereby garments are actually shaped on the loom with seams built into the weaving process.
My goal by the end of the year is to weave a capsule collection of zero waste garments constructed primarily on the loom.
